Internet Based Lesson Plan

Integrated Internet Based Lesson

Emotional Intelligence and Multiple Intelligences

Descriptive Overview of the Lesson:

Emotional Intelligence and Multiple Intelligences are two key components of problem based learning police recruit training.  Recruit Police Officers are diverse learners and need to be trained as individuals who offer unique life experiences, perceptions and interpretations for problem solving.  Police Training Officers need to understand the concepts of emotional intelligence and multiple intelligences; and be able to apply modern educational instruction methods to their field instruction.

This lesson focuses on instructional skill development for Police Training Officers (PTO) by presenting two lessons.  Lesson one focuses on emotional intelligence and journaling.  Lesson two highlights the theory of multiple intelligences.  Both lessons contain foundational information for student centered teaching in a problem based learning designed recruit training program.

During each lesson, students will be presented core through internet resources such as websites, videos, podcasts and blogs.  In lesson one; students will apply their knowledge of emotional intelligence through the demonstration of self awareness and journal documentation of their meta cognitive learning experience.  In lesson two, students will apply their knowledge of multiple intelligences by assessing their own unique multiple intelligences and comparing them with other course participants. A multiple intelligences assessment will be completed through an online survey.  Students will discuss and compare the results of their multiple intelligences profile with other course participants on the MI/EI Course Wiki.

Implementation:

Emotional Intelligence and Multiple Intelligences are instructed as part of the Police Training Officer Trainer Course pre-course assignment.  The topics are revisited in Block 5 of the 40 hour trainer course as they relate to problem based learning instruction and recruit learning.  Depending on the learning students achieve in the pre-course assignment, Block 5 instruction will last anywhere from 2 to 6 hours.  Therefore, the Integrated Internet Based Lessons on emotional intelligence and multiple intelligences could be used as either a pre-course assignment or as a supplement to Block 5 instruction.

The Integrated Internet Based Lessons will be implemented during the next Police Training Officer Trainer Course that I instruct.   Additionally, the lessons will be made available for other PTO Instructor Trainers to use in their courses after they are critiqued by other Level III PBL Police Training Instructors.  At the present time, there are no Police Training Officer Trainer Courses scheduled and future courses will be scheduled according to individual agency needs.

My personal goal is to utilize this lesson as an on line module for instruction of the Police Training Officer Trainer Course.  Currently, an on line instructional process for the PTO trainer course has not been approved by the course developers.

Setting:

The setting for this course will be a classroom, with approximately 10 to 30 police officers who have been selected to be certified as training officers for the U.S. Department of Justice and COPPS Police Training Officer Program.  Technology sources are generally accessible at the training facility but not always in the classroom.  Participants are advised to bring laptop computers to the course if they have one available.  Phones with Internet access and IPods would also be recommended for use in future courses.

Or

The setting for this course will be the participant’s choice and technology sources will need to be provided by them or their agency.

Outcomes:

  1. Students will demonstrate competency in self awareness through daily journaling of their learning process and self awareness of their strengths and weaknesses
  2. Students will create a learning activity for police training which demonstrates their knowledge of multiple intelligences and emotional intelligence.
  3. Students will demonstrate their knowledge of Multiple Intelligences by completing an inventory of their multiple intelligences and learning preferences.
  4. Students will participate in discussion groups and analyze how their strengths and weaknesses in areas of multiple intelligences impact their learning.

National Educational Technology Standards and Performance Indicators for Students:

Standard 1:  Creativity and Innovation

Students will address this standard by using their knowledge of emotional intelligence and multiple intelligences to create personal learning journals and recruit training activities.

Standard 2:  Communication and Collaboration

Students will address this standard by using the PB Wiki and Blog to interact with their peers.  Additionally, students will develop recruit training activities which utilize a variety of media to address the multiple intelligences of their diverse police recruit learners.

Standard 3:  Research and Information Fluency

Students will address this standard through the use of various media which is presented by the instructor in each lesson for their learning.  Students will also locate and demonstrate the ethical use of media to develop recruit training activities.

Standard 5:  Digital Citizenship

Students will address this standard by exhibiting a positive attitude and a commitment toward lifelong learning through documentation in their personal learning journals

Standard 6:  Technology Operations and Concepts

Students will address this standard by utilizing technology to create recruit training activities that include motivating media resources for diverse student centered learning.

Materials:

Students will need a computer with high speed internet access. Computer software includes Microsoft Word for producing documents, Adobe Acrobat for reading, Quick Time player, and Apple iTunes for viewing and listening to media.   Other equipment may include a video camera or webcam for development of training activities by students.

Learning Activities:

Students will be motivated in these lessons through the use of interesting media such as podcasts and Teacher Tube videos.  Students will be engaged through interactive assignments and collaborative discussions which will be posted on the course WIKI and Blog.  Additionally, students will be afforded the opportunity to create training objects such as videos and power points which will be posted on the WIKI for future training.

Websites:

The WIKI contains general course information, activities and assignments, assessments, resources, and collaborative work space.

The Blog contains links to current resources and provides an area for students to continue their learning, share resources and comment on related topics.

Evaluation:

Evaluation will be based on the student’s learning process and final product for Multiple Intelligences and Emotional Intelligence.  The Assessment Rubrics will be accessible to students on the WIKI.

Assessment 1:  Rubric for Emotional Intelligence:  Learning Journal Activity

Assessment 2:  Rubric for Multiple Intelligences:  Police Training Activity
